A quality fence, trellis system, or any outdoor structure starts below ground. That’s why we take the time to manufacture pointed wood posts treated with CCA and designed for strength, consistent installation, and long-term performance in soil-contact applications.
Let’s discuss the steps on how to make them.
1. Selecting the Right Raw Timber
Every post begins with carefully selected timber. When we harvest the plantation trees, we look for straightness, proper diameter, and strong fiber structure from red pine species for excellent preservative penetration. It all starts here where consistency at this stage ensures uniform treatment and structural integrity later in the process.
2. Sorting, Peeling & Preparing the Wood Post
Before the wood posts are pointed, the logs are sorted by length and diameter size. This ensures that when the logs are peeled and become posts, they are all the same size coming out of the post peeler. These logs are peeled to remove the bark. This step ensures that the post can be properly dried and treated as bark cannot absorb CCA-treatment effectively. If the posts do not meet quality standards here, they will be re-ran into our post peeler again to make smaller diameter posts or be rejected.
3. Pointing the Round Posts
Immediately after removing the bark off the logs and forming a post, one end of the post goes into our pointer machine. Each post is shaped into a uniform, centered taper, producing perfect round pointed fence posts. We make posts pointed for all different lengths.
This is not a rough bevel – it is a controlled, repeatable process that ensures balance symmetry, decreased risk of splitting, consistent tip geometry, and cleaner ground entry during installation.
A poorly formed point can weaken fibers or create off-center driving. Our process ensures structural integrity remains intact.
They are then stacked in bundles, ready to get properly dried and treated.
4. Removing the Moisture Content
Drying the pointed wood posts is essential before CCA treatment. If the wood is not dry enough, it will not properly absorb the chemical preservative. That is why our posts are kiln-dried. Kiln drying ensures the correct removal of moisture content while also helping the wood dry evenly. This process reduces the risk of cracking and splitting, which ultimately improves the effectiveness and consistency of the treatment.
5. CCA-Treating the Round Pointed Fence Posts
Once the bundles of pointed posts are dried to <20% moisture content, the posts are then put into our treating cylinder where we treat them to .40 CCA retention or .60 CCA retention. Using CCA (chromated copper arsenate), we:
- Apply a vacuum to remove air from the wood cells
- Introduce preservative under pressure
- Achieve required retention levels for ground-contact applications
Our process follows standards established by the American Wood Protection Association to ensure posts meet recognized performance guidelines. Treating pointed wood posts with CCA prevents rot, fungal decay, and termite infestation.
Because fence, orchard, and vineyard posts live in constant soil contact, proper treatment is essential. These treated pointed fence posts then sit in the drip pad for 2-3 days to let sit. This allows any excess treatment to be eliminated before getting shipped across the U.S.
6. Loading the Truckload Of Treated Posts
Once the treatment process is complete and passes quality inspection, they are ready for delivery. Each order is carefully organized and staged to ensure accurate counts and proper handling. The treated posts are then securely loaded onto semi-trucks using appropriate lifting equipment to prevent damage during transport.
We take extra care to stack and secure the load properly, ensuring stability and protection throughout the journey. From there, the truckload is shipped nationwide, delivering high-quality, professionally treated posts directly to our customers’ locations in a safe and timely manner.
Benefits of Treated Pointed Fence Posts
When it comes to pointed round posts, there are several key advantages, especially during installation. The pointed end is specifically designed to improve efficiency, performance, and overall installation quality.
One of the primary benefits is easier ground penetration. The pointed end allows the post to enter firm or compacted soils more smoothly compared to flat-ended posts. Because the post naturally displaces soil as it is driven, less initial resistance is encountered. This can significantly reduce the amount of force required during installation.
Pointed posts also reduce strain on equipment. Whether using a hydraulic post driver or manual equipment, the design allows the post to start straight and penetrate more cleanly. This lowers stress on machinery, helps prevent excessive vibration, and can extend equipment lifespan.
Another major advantage is improved alignment and accuracy. The pointed tip acts as a guide when starting the post, helping it remain centered and straight as it enters the ground. This minimizes shifting during the first few inches of driving, which is critical for maintaining uniform fence lines.
Consistency is another benefit. Pointed posts help achieve a more uniform embedment depth because they penetrate soil in a predictable manner. This results in more stable installations and a cleaner, more professional finished appearance.
When combined with proper treatment, pointed fence posts offer both long-term durability and installation efficiency, making them a common choice for agricultural, commercial, and residential fencing projects.
Applications of Pointed Round Posts
Our CCA-treated posts are commonly used for:
- Agricultural fencing
- Livestock containment
- Orchard and vineyard trellis systems
- Perimeter and boundary fencing
- Commercial installations
By combining careful timber selection, precision pointing, and proper ground-contact treatment, we produce posts designed to perform for years under demanding conditions.
Final Thoughts
While pointed round posts can cost slightly more than blunt posts, their versatility and ease of installation make them the preferred great for a wide range of applications. From building fences and trellis systems to supporting commercial and agricultural projects, pointed posts offer efficiency and reliability that many builders and landowners value. For many projects, this added convenience and performance easily outweigh the small difference in cost.
At West Branch Wood Treating, we’re proud to provide high-quality treated pointed posts built for durability and long-term performance. Whether you’re working on a large commercial installation or a simple property improvement, choosing the right post can make all the difference in the success of your project.
